Farm-Based Educational Programs

IMG_2986 intern teaching kalo

Our two-acre educational farm is a thriving natural environment that offers outdoor classroom areas including rich bio-diverse gardens, crop fields, plant nursery, composting zone, aquaponics, pens and pastures for animal livestock, and a training hale for holding classes and training workshops.  The farm is home to many diverse species of native and other beneficial plants, vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits, all grown utilizing permaculture principles and sustainable agronomic practices.

Farm-based programs utilize farming and gardening activities to improve the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health of participants, while helping people rediscover their connection to nature in positive ways that facilitate their personal growth and development.  Individuals of all ages learn the importance of appreciating and caring for our natural resources, growing our own healthy food, and understanding the importance of sustainability efforts.  The farm is a multi-faceted teaching environment, and our gardens are designed to appeal to all the senses while creating a sense of well-being for all who visit or work in them.

Through hands-on learning, we teach sustainable agriculture practices and cultural values that support children, youth and adults in becoming good stewards of the ʻaina (land), while encouraging environmental awareness and stewardship.

School and Community Gardens

School Garden

The Maui Farm supports and encourages school and community gardens by offering field trips, farm tours and service learning opportunities for students, parents, teachers, volunteers and community members.   Field trips and service learning are customized to meet the specific ages, needs and interests of the participants.

The Maui Farm serves as a teaching farm to promote biodiversity and natural farming practices that nurture the environment, as well as a demonstration site to inspire community members to start a garden.  The Maui Farm also offers support in designing, building and maintaining a school, backyard or community garden.

Friends of The Maui Farm Volunteer Program

Community members have a meaningful opportunity to support our work by joining Friends of The Maui Farm Volunteer Program. Our Friends participate in activities that are educational and beneficial for both participants and The Maui Farm.  We welcome individuals interested in volunteerism, and community groups (students, civic organizations and businesses) interested in service projects. Volunteers reap benefits from physical activity, access to fresh produce, new knowledge, and a day on the farm.

Employment and Training

The Maui Farm supports workforce development for youth and adults, and collaborates with other employment and training programs by offering educational internships that provide job skills training and supervision in sustainable agriculture, grounds and facilities maintenance, and plant nursery work.  The Maui Farm also offers entry-level practicum experiences for students interested in working with children and families.  As interns gain relevant work experience, and build their skills and confidence, they are better-prepared to affirm their potential career choice in agriculture, sustainability, or human services.

The Maui Farm partners with MEO AmeriCorps Environmental Program, UH Maui College, UH West Oahu, Kamehameha Schools Maui, Maui Job Corps, and other community-based organizations that seek meaningful internship opportunities for their participants.
